1. About Competence Based Curriculum (CBC)

The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) consist of 2-6-3-3-3 education cycle grouped into four general categories (pre-school will be 2 years, 6 years in primary, 3 years in junior secondary, 3 years in senior secondary and finally 3 years in university):

Early Year Education (Pre-Primary & Lower Primary)

This consists of daycare for one year (optional), pre-primary one (PP1), pre-primary two (PP2) and lower primary ( Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 )

Middle School (Upper Primary & Lower Secondary)

This consists of upper primary having Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade 6 while lower secondary having Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9

Senior School (Upper Secondary)

Career specialization occurs from upper secondary which is Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12. The career specialization is generalized into three categories which are Arts & Sports Sciences, Social Sciences and STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Tertiary Education

2. Career Choices – CBCs greatest advantage and difference from previous systems

Under the CBC curriculum, learners get to start thinking about their career choices from as early as Senior school and these career choices have been categorized into:

  1. Arts & Sports Sciences
  2. Social Sciences
  3. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
3. Expectation of both Private and Primary Schools

Based on the design of CBC, the project would be very successful and impactful to the learner if:

  1. ICT is integrated in all levels and in all subjects
  2. Both private and public schools to embrace the use of technology in delivery of the CBC curriculum
Teachers in both private and public schools to undergo the necessary up-skilling in order to understand the value of and the difference of CBC as compared to previous curriculum

4. The Dis-Advantage / Biggest Challenge to most private and public schools

To many schools, both private and public, CBC is considered a very good policy document that works exemplary well on paper mainly because:

  1. Most public and private schools do not have the ICT resources to supplement the delivery of CBC to the advantage of the learners
  2. Most public and private schools do not have teachers with technical skills to deliver the curriculum through the use of technology and ICT

This will lead into a future where learners who completed the curriculum without the above resources will be disadvantaged when compared to learners who completed the curriculum in a school that had these resources and well-trained teachers.

It is the desire of these public and private schools to adopt and implement recommendations to the latter to the benefit of the learners. However, implementing such projects and initiatives remain to be a very expensive affair that very few private schools can get into.

4. School Partnerships with Private Sector

Because of the above-mentioned disadvantages, partnership between schools and the private sector is encouraged by the government in order to ensure learners is disadvantaged private schools are not left behind with learners in able private schools even as the government continues to find ways and alternatives to support public schools through partnerships with the private sector.

It is against this backdrop that St. Agnes Education Center outsourced the services of Carnegie Training Institute (CTI) to revive its computer laboratory with the intention of enabling learners to get access to technology projects that boosts performance in CBC curriculum learning activities.

Carnegie Training Institute – CTI has over 40 technology projects that form a digital literacy and coding curriculum that integrates technology into the CBC curriculum.

The mission being to combine education and technology to provide learners with the core computing skills that will best prepare them for the future.

Each technology project includes a teacher guide, workbook, and resources
